Duas Rodas' GranFlavor voted the Most Innovative Ingredient at FI Innovation Awards 2019

Exclusive technology for encapsulating powder flavorings of the Brazilian multinational wins 1st place in the main national award of ingredients, products and food supplements industry

The multinational Company Duas Rodas, the national leader in flavor and ingredients for the food and beverage industry, won first place at the Food Ingredients Innovation Awards 2019 in the “Most Innovative Ingredient” category. The national award aims to value innovation and recognize creation of products beneficial to the end consumer.

The award-winning solution is GranFlavor, a unique powder flavor encapsulation technology for a better sensory experience in the final product, compared to usual microencapsulation technologies, especially regarding odor release. Besides providing greater aromatic release, it also allows greater aroma fixation and better protection.

“This award is a recognition of the work of our multidisciplinary team, permanently involved in research and development of innovative ingredients aligned with the global market needs. Here at Duas Rodas, innovation is a strategic pillar of competitiveness and business expansion, an understanding that we reinforce even more with the launch of this exclusive technology”, says the Head of Innovation and Technology of Duas Rodas, Antonio Carlos Figueiredo Gonçalves. The company allocates 5% (minimum) of its annual revenue in innovation, adds the executive.
The flavors obtained with GranFlavor technology are the result of two years of work by a team of experts at Duas Rodas, through in-depth studies, tests, evaluations, comparisons, analyses of stability and application behavior.

“Principles of four different encapsulation technologies have been thoroughly studied to create authoring technology that could meet the needs raised in a market research we have done. The result is a unique combination of modern technologies, with a change in the physicochemical characteristics of the flavor, form of preparation and manufacture of the ingredient, resulting in flavors with excellent performance in their applications”, explains the Innovation Manager, Fernando de Jesus.

The studies, partnered with researchers from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), proved effectiveness and applicability of GranFlavor. In the development phase, quantitative descriptive profile tests (PDQs) were carried out in cake and cookie applications, among other products, in order to assess and quantify sensory attributes, comparing flavors obtained with the main market encapsulation technologies with those obtained with Duas Rodas exclusive technology.

Samples with GranFlavor technology were superior in sensory impact, in addition to increasing odor and taste performance compared to current market technologies. According to Fernando, cake flavors, for example, offer highly competitive differences, as they allow greater aromatic release of the aroma right at the opening of the package, during the baking process and in tasting. In addition, GranFlavor provides a delay in oxidation, with consequent increase in shelf life over the traditional ingredient.

GranFlavor’s cake application line provides the market with a very diverse mix of flavors such as Vanilla, Chocolate, Corn, Coconut, Orange, Pineapple, Carrot, Lime, Cassava and Banana. For the cookies category they have the flavors Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Coconut, Corn, Orange, Pineapple and Lime. Soon, the line with GranFlavor technology will be extended to other categories.

“In addition to providing excellent performance, the GranFlavor technology was developed within a concept of sustainability whose processing requires no water, with a 40% reduction in electricity consumption compared to current technologies”, adds the Innovation Manager.

The odor-and-taste-enhanced top notes of this unique new flavoring technology open up new launch opportunities for our customers, aligned with the latest market trends, allowing for a much more interesting end-user sensory experience”, adds the Commercial and Marketing Head at Duas Rodas, Hilton Siqueira Leonetti.

T-Sweet and iSugar: Duas Rodas Solutions Awarded in 2017 and 2018

In the last two years, two ingredients from Duas Rodas have obtained prominent recognition at the FI Innovation Awards. In 2018, iSugar was in the top three in the “Most Innovative Functional Ingredient” category. This solution provides a basis for partial or total substitution of sugar used in ice cream formulations.

In 2017, the multinational was among the top three in the “Most Innovative Functional Ingredient” category with T-Sweet, a 100% natural flavoring technology that softens the taste of low-sugar industrialized products as yogurts and nectars.

Awards reception

The Fi Innovation Awards 2019 awarded ingredients and products in four categories: most innovative functional ingredient, most innovative ingredient, most innovative functional product and most innovative product. In the first stage, the participating companies registered their products. The next stage was the evaluation of the Technical Committee, which assessed aspects as innovation, consumer benefits, economic impact and technology applied.
The award ceremony took place last night (8/20) at the Transamérica Expo Center in São Paulo (SP), during the 23rd edition of Food ingredients South America (FiSA).
