Brazil is the largest world’s producer of açaí (Euterpe sp.), fruit well known for being a source of energy and rich in fibers, minerals and vitamins, in addition to a high concentration of polyphenols and anthocyanins.
Açaí palm trees can be found not only in the Brazilian Amazon (E. oleracea), but also in the Atlantic Forest, an important biome of the country. The açaí berry found in this region – from the South of Bahia until Rio Grande do Sul states -, is from the species Euterpe edulis and is commonly known as Açaí Juçara.
The fruits of Açaí Juçara are grown in consortium with other crops in reforestation areas, an initiative that produces positive impacts on the economy and the environment. In addition to contributing to the preservation of the biome, it promotes the sustainable use of natural resources and the socioeconomic development of rural communities, providing a value-added product with nutritional and differentiated functions.
